Pacific Rural Internet Connectivity System (PACRIS)

The RICS initiative aims to address some of the major telecommunication challenges facing rural and remote communities in the Pacific Islands region including:

  • lack of access to communications technology for rural and remote areas
  • high costs of ICT's and access to ICT's
  • digital divide affecting mostly rural and remote areas

The RICS system was setup and configured by MCIT engineers and was firstly tested at Mulinuu before it was deployed to Vaipouli College in 2009 where airtime was sponsored by PACTEL for 12 months. This RICS unit was supposed to provide internet access for the OLPC project nearby.

To date there is one other RICS unit deployed at Saleapaga Primary School where internet access is provided for SENESE to use for acquiring updates for students cochlear implants

Project is funded by AusAID
